Div. 13's Identity Projects 

Our Halloween Celebration will be on Tuesday Oct. 31st in the afternoon.   Students are welcome/encouraged to come in costume on Halloween but please remember costumes should be appropriate easy to take off and on, as they will be going outside for recess/lunch and we wouldn't want them to be ruined for trick or treating.  Thanks to these families for providing our snacks and goodies.  Fruit Plate - August, Veggie Tray - Sean, Special Treat - Gavin, Chips/Popcorn etc. - Olivia, and Other - Aneka                                             

November is Family Literacy month.  On Oct. 30th you will be receiving information and a calendar for Fairview's  Club RED (Read Every Day!) Please read thoroughly and keep your child's reading calendar in a visual place like the fridge or in their planner so you can record their daily reading.  Our goal is that every student in Div 13 become a Club RED member!

Oct. 21/23

Div. 13 had a great time skating.  All the students did so well and were very proud of themselves. Thanks so much to all the parents who drove and helped with skates.  Your support was very appreciated.  All parents who do help out on these field trips and in the classroom should fill out the school's volunteer forms so we can keep them on file.   Speaking of volunteers if you are available on Monday, Oct. 30th at 10:45 to help with some pumpkin math and craving please let me know, ideally if I could get 3 volunteers that would be great.   

Our Identity Day was a big success!  Thanks again to all the parents and grandparents who were able to join us.  The class was excited to show their amazing #1 Canadian posters.

Tuesday is our Skating field trip!  Students must be signed up on the parent portal, bring BOOSTERS and MONEY on Monday if they are renting skates or helmets. Thanks to the parents who have volunteered to drive; Gavin, Olivia, Aurora, Massimo, and August plus those parents who are just driving their own child.  Please be sure to tell me if you are planning to join us (to drive just your child) because while planning the trip I need to know organize drivers for the whole class. Students that do not have their booster seat, will not be able to attend the skating field trip.  Children are to use booster seats that they bring home, due to legal issues we cannot use any extra booster seats that may be in our volunteer driver’s vehicles.   Booster Information: Child car seats (icbc.com)

Tuesday is the Intermediate Cross Country Race and Wednesday is the Primary Race.

#1 CANADIAN POSTERS DUE asap (ideally Monday or Tuesday) as our IDENTITY DAY is on  Thursday.  In the morning we will be visiting other classrooms to see their projects and then in the afternoon parents are invited to come into our classroom to see Div. 13's posters from 1:45-2:15.       Please remember to have your child's first and last name on the poster and include photos, or even drawn pictures of family, when they were younger, sports/hobbies, pets, heritage/cultural background (for example if your dad was from Italy you might draw an Italian flag), favourite foods (eg) maybe a pic of pasta).  The students that have already brought theirs in are all so different but all great!   Please talk to your child also about what they will say about their pictures and themself.  

Friday is the Provincial Pro D day so no school for students.

Did you know that Oct. 8 - Oct. 14th is Fire Safety week?  We have read a couple books, watch a video, learning and discussing about what we should do in case of a fire. We have already had several fire drills at school including one today.  We talked about the importance of knowing their home address and to have a family meeting spot.  For homework this week I've asked the students to learn their addresses and read over and discuss The Dragon's Fire-Safety Rhyme in their poetry duo tang.  Fire safety is something that can never be reviewed enough.   I had this already to go yesterday but didn't get a chance to post til this morning after walking my dog near the devastating school fire in Port Coquitlam.  This reinforces fire safety and being so grateful for Fairview.  

October 6th

 It was a short but busy week.  The students of Div. 13 continued to do an excellent job of doing the announcements for the Friends in Need Food Bank.  Look at all the food (stacked in the red containers behind) that Fairview collected. 

Div. 3 & 13!

Scholastic Book order forms went home on Thursday. If you are interested in ordering please use our class code on the front of the order form, that way our class benefits from some free books.  These books will be delivered directly to your homes. A huge thank you to Massimo's mom for organizing all of these.  

All the children were excited to bring home their turkey puppets which included several things that they were thankful for.  Gratitude Scavenger hunts also went home in your child's poetry duo tang this weekend.  Please take the time if possible to do this with your child.   We have a class 'GRATITUDE' pumpkin which we are writing down everything that we are thankful for!  We hope to have it covered by the end of October.  

Hopefully you are all starting to work on your child's #1 Canadians posters.  These need to be returned by Oct. 16-18th. 

Don't forget to sign up on the portal for our skating field trip on Tuesday, Oct. 17th and if your child is renting skates and a helmet please send the money in a labelled ziplock bag, including your child's skate size.

Div. 13's  Stained Glass Name Art!

Div. 13 is doing a fantastic job of promoting the Friends in Need Food Bank!  Thank you to everyone who has already sent in non-perishable items.  This food drive ends on Friday and Fairview is really making a big difference for those in need.  

I am currently coaching volleyball and cross country so if you are running late to pick up after school I will have taken your child to the office so that I can get to practices/games and races.

The students have made great progress in learning the routines and expectations of our class.  Thank you for your support in signing and helping your child put their planner (currently a grey duo tang) and book back into their ziplock and then backpack.  If they forget the book they will write the title down the next day as it must be returned before they can take a different book home.  Poetry came home today as it will every Friday (in the planner duo tang as when we get our planner it will be our Poetry and More duo tang).  Please have your child sing the songs, they are getting very good at them.  The tune to the Vancouver Island is the old Gilligan's Island t.v. show.  

Terry Fox Run was a big success!  Donations will be accepted either at school or online until Sept. 30th. https://schools.terryfox.ca/33090   

Most families have now signed up to bring treats for one Div. 13 celebrations.  Once everyone has signed up I will post this in the window and on one of the pages on this blog.  Please note:  We do have one student who is allergic to tree nuts (peanuts and peanut butter are okay) so please do not send any in your child's lunches or for our celebrations.

Welcome to Div. 13!

Welcome to Grade 2 and 3!

Div. 13 has had a busy first week; getting to know each other, learning expectations and also getting organized.  Thanks to all of you that sent back forms, marked your child's initials on all their crayons/markers and for returning them so quickly.  I really appreciate your help with this. If you haven't had a chance yet please send in the Getting Acquainted Form, the Pink verification form and markers etc., as soon as possible. 

Thanks to everyone that was able to come for Family Reading it was wonderful to see so many parents.  I understand that many of you have to be at work and are unable to attend or can only come occasionally, please be assured that your child can always join another parent.

Each morning we do Name Boggle, finding as many words that can be made out of our special helper's name. This is an excellent literacy activity and the students are already very good at it.  When it is your child's special helper day they will bring their sheet home, if you could help them to find even more words that would be great. Take the time you need but please return as they like to share their results with their classmates and we will keep them for their memory books.  I hope you enjoy this family activity, it definitely gets your brain working and helps the students with rhyming, reading and writing skills!

This letter went home with your students this week but I wanted to include it here as well for you to refer to.

Dear Parents of Division 11 Students,

My name is Sheralyn Rowledge-Toscani and I have been a teacher at Fairview for many years, largely in the primary grades. I am really looking forward to a great year! I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your children to my class and answer some questions you may have about this school year.  Div. 13 has 18 students.

 

Our school supplies this year have been done in bulk.  The cost of these supplies are $60.00, this includes supplies and your child’s planners. $60.00 should be paid asap either online through the parent portal or in cash (please send in a ziplock labelled with your child’s name). I have already organized and labelled most of your child’s things, however I am sending home their markers, pencil crayons and crayons and would appreciate if you could label each one with your child’s initials. Often, we find these on the floor, and this solves the mystery of whose it is!  Thank you so much in advance for your help with this!  If possible, please return them to the school as soon as possible.  

 

*Students need a pair of sturdy running “indoor” shoes.  These will be used for gym and the classroom - this helps keep our school clean. 

 

*Planners will provide home and school communication throughout the year, and where your child can record their home reading. Unfortunately, the supplier for our planners burned down in the Kelowna wildfire so we will not be receiving these for a few weeks.  Instead, I have copied September and October pages and they will come home daily in a grey duotang (this will also double as their Poetry and More Duotang – more information about this soon).  

 

*An extra set of clothes (including socks and underwear) is suggested in case of any type of accidents. (bathroom/puddles!). 

 

*Fairview has a pack in/pack out lunch, these can be in either a paper bag or clean container. These will stay in their backpacks except during eating times.  I recommend that you send a napkin each day so that you limit food contact with the table. There is no sharing of any food.  Please send a labelled water bottle for your child as that is so much safer than the water fountains. Water refill stations are open.  

 

*Please update the verification form with any allergy information.  If your child has a serious allergy, please request the medical information documents from the office.  

 

*Div. 11 will be spending lots of time outside.  Rain or shine we will go out for learning, and physical activity.  Students will also be out for recess and lunch; this is the West Coast!  Please ensure your child has appropriate clothing and footwear for all kinds of weather.  Fairview is so lucky to have our forest but as you know it gets wet and mucky!  Rain boots are recommended because as you know children love puddles and mud!  

  

*To improve the ventilation, we will often have our classroom door and windows open, please send a hoodie or a sweater so if your child is cold, they have something warm.

 

*I have attached a questionnaire (blue sheet) to this letter that I would like you to fill out and return as soon as possible.  These give me valuable information and insights about your child that sometimes would take me months to discover.  Thanks J

 

Division 13’s Schedule:

*Library will be on Tuesday, your child’s library book will come home in a labelled ziplock bag and should be returned weekly.

 

*Family Reading will be on Fridays 8:30-8:45.

 

*Our gym days are Wednesday & Thursday but as most of you know exercise and movement breaks are important every day, please ensure that your child is dressed in comfortable clothes so that they are able to fully participate in all activities.  

*

Fine Arts (music/drama) with Mr. Saul is on Thursday & Fridays.

 

*Division 13 has their own blog – the link is https://lucky13fairview.blogspot.com

This can also be accessed by going to Fairview Elementary, then Classroom Websites and then Ms Rowledge-Toscani. This is the main method of communication in our class.  There is a monthly calendar plus I generally update it weekly (usually Friday but for sure by Sunday!). I will try to send an email each week as a reminder. Please check regularly so you know what we have been up to and what is coming up.

I like to include photos of the students in action but to do this, parents must agree to outside media.  This is with several other forms that you will need to complete asap on the parent portal.    

 

I am excited to spend this school year with your children and I am also looking forward to working with you, the parents – partners in your child’s education.
